The Royal Green Jackets –

An Elite Regiment

The Royal Green Jackets stood among the most distinguished regiments in the history of the British Army. Formed in 1966 from three historic rifle and light infantry regiments, they inherited a proud tradition of innovation, marksmanship, and courage dating back to the Napoleonic Wars.

Renowned as an elite fighting force, the Green Jackets combined speed, adaptability, and professionalism with the independence of the rifleman spirit. They earned more battle honours than any other regiment in the British Army, a record that reflects their long and distinguished service across many of the world’s battlefields.

Their reputation was further forged during the long campaign in Northern Ireland. Throughout the Troubles, the Royal Green Jackets spent many years deployed in some of the most dangerous areas, including Belfast and South Armagh. Operating under constant threat of ambushes, sniper fire, and roadside bombs, they showed resilience, courage, and discipline of the highest order. The regiment suffered many losses, but their professionalism never wavered, and they won widespread respect for their effectiveness in one of the most demanding operational environments faced by the British Army.

Although the Royal Green Jackets were amalgamated into The Rifles in 2007, their legacy lives on. Their traditions, honours, and spirit endure – a lasting reminder of an elite regiment that served Britain with distinction and honour.
